SHOW: Tonight At Buddies!

INSIDE: Virgina Woolf, A Garden Paradise

Festival Director, Moynan King transformed the Anti-Chamber into a lush Victorian garden for Hysteria. She engaged glitter queens, Trixie and Beever, to build the astroturf and foam Oasis. The installation included enough patio lanters to make Kim Mitchell jealous, glitter by the pound and crotchless period undergarments.

The installation was a huge hit with audience members. SO MUCH FUN!

Diversity is the key to hysteria, the women’s performance event that festival director Moynan King’s organized since its 2003 premiere.

“The festival has always emphasized a cultural and stylistic cross-section,” says King, a Buddies associate artist.

“Toronto doesn’t have a women’s performance community, so Hysteria both allows me to program work I admire and to allow artists to meet each other.”

Hysteria is a unique Canadian festival; other women’s festivals, such as Winnipeg’s FemFest, focus on theatre.

“Performance isn’t the same thing. In Hysteria, participants don’t use an established style, but rather invent the form as they invent their work. They can create a style that suits themselves.”

As in the past, this fifth Hysteria is a mix of group evenings and solo shows. The performers are mostly Canadian, but King feels it’s also important to have international representation.

Among the visitors are New York spoken word artist Staceyann Chin and Sweden/German duo Anna Berndtson and Irina Runge, who bill themselves as TBL (TallBlondLadies).

The TBL presentation is in association with FADO Performance Art Centre; in addition to the hour-long show at Buddies (October 24), FADO hosts a five-hour performance piece at YYZ Gallery (October 26; see performanceart.ca).

“It’s European performance art, focused, flowing, concentrated,” notes King. “The pair does some really intriguing things by blending ultra-feminine attire and sports gear.”

Chin (October 23) is an activist who “puts herself on the line. I was shaken the last time I heard her read; she’s simultaneously vulnerable and powerful. Staceyann is remarkable in the way she can take her own experience and create compelling, empowering art. It’s so different from the old-school, victim notion of feminist performance.”

But don’t forget the Canadian contingent, with performances by, among others, Shawna Dempsey (October 24), Carmen Aguirre (author of The Refugee Hotel, October 27) and Sharron Matthews (October 28). Also check out Gaggle (October 23), a group piece that explores female dynamics and competition, directed by Karin Randoja and choreographed by Alisha Stranges.

One highlight will be a workshop of Spin (October 25), Evalyn Parry’s look at the bicycle “as muse, musical instrument and instrument of social change.”

“It’s an amazing piece of unknown feminine history,” notes King. “One of the characters is Anna Londonderry, who biked around the world in 1895. She was funded by advertising, including placards on her bike and body promoting bottled water.”

ACTIVIST: Laramie Revisited

Vanity Fair feature about Matthew Sheppard
It's a somber anniversary to mark, but an important one. For many gay teens growing up in the 90's Matthew Shepard became a hero. His life and horrible death became an inspiration for many of us to come out and speak out and stand-up. Shepard's death was the inspiration for the hit show The Laramie Project, which was producted at Buddies almost six years ago.

This weekend, world-wide, productions of The Laramie Project will simultaneously happen. The Toronto performance will be directed by Studio 180’s Artistic Director Joel Greenberg. Performers include the entire cast from the Studio 180 production of The Laramie Project at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre in 2004.

According to cast member Jessica Greenberg importance of this event is monumental. "Ten years is a long time, so there is whole generation that didn't see the show. The story and the circumstances are as relevant today as they were back then." Greenberg believes there is a challenge to remounting this production. "Ensuring that this story isn't a historical artifact, that it's not a time and place in the past. This is something we are mindful of with our production."

The performance will begin at 8 pm on October 12, 2009, with doors opening at 7 pm. Bread & Circus is located at 299 Augusta Avenue, 416.925.8898. Tickets will be available at the door only, and admission is By Donation, with all proceeds benefiting The 519 Church Street Community Centre.

Here as some additonal items from different online forums

From our friend at Jeremy @
Shape + Colour.

"When I think of Matthew Shepard I hurt. There is very little separating me from him other than the random elemental geography of where I happened to be born. We were born close to the same time. We lived in small towns in long, wide, open places where the sun set for days. And we were both gay. There but for the grace of God go I…

His legacy to us is both a freedom and a burden. His murder unlocked a societal door and in the last 11 years, for all of our turning, we have not opened it. We do not always carry this weight well. We get lazy, we let shit slide. And each time we don’t stand up for ourselves, we let Matthew bleed a little longer. We let Sean Kennedy wound rip deeper. We let Sean Kennedy fall to the pavement and break a little harder."

This chilling podcast by Xtra's Joseph Couture is a series of cold calls to Laramie residents asking their views on Matthew Shepard eleven years later.

Newly appointed gay icon, Kathy Griffin used Prop-8 and Matthew Shepard as a focus for her
Norma Gay episode on this season's My Life On The D-List.

Never Forget.

INTERVIEW: Lex Vaughn

Two of our favourite people: Lex Vaughn and a Fab columnist Paul Bellini join forces in the new issue of Fab Magazine. The duo offer some great LOL moments.

Vaughn on why she moved from the US to Toronto: "Pussy. And Second City"

Vaughn on the change in the comedy climate: “I get upset by what people find funny. It’s like when you’re in a movie and you’re the only one not laughing and all you can think is, ‘Oh humanity why? Why did you do this?’”

Lex Vaughn will perform at this year's Hysteria Festival. Check-out her performance alongside other hilarious comics and performers.
